Name-giving ceremony PALLIETER

Back to efficient dredging news

On Saturday 21 February 2004 the name-giving ceremony of the 5,400m³ trailing suction hopper dredger PALLIETER built for the Belgian contractor DEME (Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering N.V.) took place in Zeebrugge (Belgium).  The ceremony was officiated by Mrs. Miet Somers-Bourlon, wife of Mr. Bart Somers, Minister-President of Vlaanderen. IHC Holland and DEME signed the contract for the building of the PALLIETER in August 2002. The keel was laid down on 20 March 2003 and the ship was launched on 4 October 2003. This new dredger is pre-eminently suitable for both working in shallow water, as the maintenance of ports, beach suppletion and land reclamation projects. The vessel couples a no nonsense design approach to a high degree of versatility. The economy of operation will be supported by attention to the weight and the load capacity, while the main engines will run on heavy fuel. The PALLIETER is a twin-screw trailing suction hopper dredger. The vessel is equipped with one suction tube with an internal diameter of 1,000mm at portside. Herewith a dredging depth of maximum 33 metres can be achieved. Alternatively a deep dredging suction tube installation with an internal diameter of 700mm can be installed to achieve a dredging depth of 60m. Part of this installation is a 1,700kW submerged dredge pump. Accommodation and bridge are situated forward; the engine room at aft.
The maximum carrying capacity is 7,800 tons at a draught of just 7.10m. The dredged material can be discharged directly into the sea through two rows rectangular bottom doors. The load can also be discharged by means of a self-emptying system, in which the dredged soil is pumped ashore through a floating pipeline, or discharged through a spraying nozzle, so-called "rainbowing". Accommodation has been provided for a crew of 14 persons.
