From the editorBack to efficient dredging news In these turbulent times of mergers, reorganisations and upcoming split in IHC Caland, the business is still steady at IHC Systems. In the past few months a step by step reduction has been made to our flexible capacity. As yet, more than this adjustment doesn't seem necessary this year. However, further going rationalisations and only a limited amount of bright spots do make evident that the standstill has not yet come to an end. The uncertainty about the future of this industry in the next years will remain a deciding factor in determining our policy. Still, we don't have to be too negative about it, as on the long run there is an intrinsic positive sentiment in our branch; all economies must keep on growing and we all want to keep on spending time at recreational areas at the coast! And this recreation at the coastlines will surely help us all through the economic winter. A visit to our customers in the Middle East proved that the oil dollars are being spent on a number of very exclusive projects in front of the coastline in Dubai. The two Palm projects and "the Globe" is resort development on new land before the coast, but on a quite different scale than we know at our Dutch VINEX locations. For those interested in the developments in the Middle East and the progress of the dredge constructions over there, you will find a lot of interesting information at: http://www.nakheel.com. Current projects move from a smaller set of new-building projects (SDI cutter dredger, Boskalis hopper dredgers and a number of Engineering & Renovation projects) to different upgrade and renovation projects for the new firm Van Oord N.V. (among others). Furthermore a mayor part has been taken by virtual dredging, as a result of the orders for two dredge simulators for training purposes. All in all we will be working again very hard this year to reinforce the position of our clients and shipyards to maximise "Efficient Dredging". |
