Cutter suction dredger simulator

Back to efficient dredging news

IHC Systems has been awarded the order to supply a cutter suction dredger simulator to the French daughter SDI of the DEME Group, Belgium. The simulator will be developed in co-operation with DEME technical and operational staff. It will be used to educate existing and future crew for the cutter suction dredger fleet. The simulator is intended for SDI in Lambersart near Lille, France. The main purpose is to familiarise the crew with the amount of information, typical dredging characteristics and the necessary actions as a result of trainer initiated disturbances. The interface will be based on the one of the 26.100kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger, which is presently under construction at IHC Holland's yard in Kinderdijk, ref. CO1241. Dredge desk and Human Machine Interface will be familiar. This way it is possible to work with the system even before the real dredger is finished! Besides the dredger which is under construction it is also possible to load the characteristics of existing large dredgers. It will be possible to execute two types of training:

  1. procedure: the logical way to execute actions without damaging the equipment;
  2. dynamical: special attention will be paid to the process dynamics like: swinging, positioning, hydraulic transport, cutter load, etc.

The dynamical simulations will be extended with sound to experience a realistic dredging behaviour. Also the dredge master will experience different vibration levels felt on board of a dredger by means of actuators in his chair. Several types of soil can be chosen from to generate a dredge area. In one dredge area a maximum of three types of soil can exist. The trainer has the possibility of monitoring the actions taken by the student and to manipulate the process by creating disturbances and/or calamities.
